A character building weekend at Brands Hatch

After our progress at the previous Snetterton round of the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford championship of Great Britain I was thoroughly looking forward to our next outing on the famous Brands Hatch GP track.

This was my first time driving on the GP circuit and it was great to think that I was on a section of track that rarely gets used because of noise restrictions limiting the number of days cars are allowed on it.

Things didn’t begin too well however after a pure error on my behalf damaged the front of the car in the first practice session and I was forced to pit to repair the damage.

Sessions two and three were held in torrential rain which I must admit wasn’t ideal for learning the high speed sections of the GP loop, however we were able to make progress in both sessions and I felt that I at least had a grasp of the wet conditions.

However that was as good as things got! Qualifying was dry which was the first time I had ever driven the circuit in anything that resembled normal conditions and I was quite cautious in bringing the tires up to temperature. After all I didn’t want a repeat of my free practice 1 antics now did I ;)

Race 1 was rain interrupted which resulted in the entire field pitting and changing tyres and setup to cope with the sudden downpour, however for me race 2 was where the real action lied!

After a great start for race 2 I was well up in the 27 car strong pack and battling hard for position, when my good friend Nils Versterguaard was tapped into a spin at Graham Hill bend. Unfortunately for both Nils and I he was left broadside across the track and I was unable to avoid him, removing the right rear corner of my car at 90mph on his left front.

With the left hand side of my car still looking pretty handy at this point I found myself in slow motion as the car slid onto the wet grass and into the barrier. The result sadly is a Juno Formula Ford Chassis that is looking very second hand indeed.

Due to the severity of the accident I was escorted off to the Brands Hatch medical centre for a full assessment and I feel I should comment on just how professional and polite they were, despite a Juno driver in their building pumped with adrenaline and claiming he was totally fine and wanted to get back in the race!

After a 15minuite monitoring period and plenty of questions I was released and thankfully can report I feel perfectly fine. A massive thank you to both the marshals and medical team for everything.

As a driver and team owner its always very frustrating when you are involved in an accident that wasn’t instigated by your mistake, however that’s the risk we run in Motorsport and I think if it wasn’t that way then a great deal of the thrill would be lost.

I will leave you this week with a fact about visibility while driving a Formula Ford during a wet race, consider that in your road car, approximately 100 metres behind a car producing large spray, your visibility is reduced by 27%. In a Formula Ford, at 100mph, 10 metres from the car in front you cannot see an object half a metre in front of your face! You are purely driving using you peripheral vision with references from the side of the track as you are passing them.

I don’t have an actual percentage figure for this reduction in visibility but I would put money on it being at least 90%.

Until next time

Time to take stock and develop a strategy.

After three very exciting races on the new Snetterton 300 circuit last month its now time to focus all my resources on the next round of the championship at Brands Hatch on June 18th and 19th. This will be the first time that I have ever raced on the prestigious Brands Grand Prix track which I must say I am really looking forward too.

The track itself combines many of the key turns associated with the Indy layout but also some truly great corners through the woodland at the back of the circuit. As well as being one of the British Formula Ford races it also marks the start of the Euro Cup, which will see teams and drivers from across Europe come and race with us making a real Formula Ford spectacle.

My 3 Snetterton races held on May 14th and 15th were what I class as a success, with my best results to date. There is still plenty of ground to be made up to the pace setting teams of Jamun and JTR but I’m confident that with a cool head and my gritty determination that we will get there bit by bit.

The footage from Snetterton is already out on Motors TV but will also be broadcast this Saturday, 4th June, at 7am on channel 4.

For all of you who are able to attend Brands Hatch I truly hope to put on a show for you and please do stop by and say hello.

A tough start for 2011, but there’s more to come.

After what has been a hectic 6 weeks for and the team I’ve finally gotten chance to sit down and give you guys my perspective on the first two meetings of this season. As with most things in Motorsport, life seems to move in excess of 100mph all the time and it can be difficult to stop and reflect on how things have come to be.

This years season kicked off at the home of British Motorsport, Silverstone, on April 9th and 10th. Although it was far from ideal my first shakedown of this years Juno chassis was on the day before the first race. Everyone involved in this years season put in extra effort to make sure we were able to reach the first meeting and most importantly complete the three races.

After a troubled first test day with small gremlins putting pay to most of the days running, we had a reliable race weekend. Unfortunately it was not without it challenges as although reliable, I was off the pace and found myself picking up positions through smart driving rather than outright pace.

The overall result of the weekend was three finishes and a small points haul, however there was certainly work to be done, both from a drivers and an engineering point of view.

With the next three rounds of the championship being held at Oulton Park just 10 days later we were again up against it and it proved to be another tough weekend if you only consider the results. A 15th, 14th and a DNF hardly make exciting reading but we did make progress throughout the weekend and discovered where a large slice of time has been hiding.

With the commitment everyone has shown to the programme so far I’m determined to bring my driving to a new level and the car as well and really make a mark in 2011. I feel like at the moment we have all the ingredients to create a package that is capable of being competitive at the front end of the field rather than just competing in each race.

My next three races are scheduled for the 14th and 15th May at the newly revamped Snetterton 300 circuit and I’m thoroughly looking forward to it. J

Just a quick thank you to everyone who attended the Oulton Park race weekend, it was great to meet so many new faces and be able to give away lots of signed goodies at the Autograph session, your support is what keeps moral high even in the tough times.

David becomes an official blogger for Motors TV.

My 2011 racing season seems to be going from strength to strength even before I have set foot in this years car.

Not only am I scheduled to be driving for a top chassis manufacturer in the form of Juno Racing Cars, but I already have a line of promotional events and performances lined up for the year too which I always enjoy. I am particularly looking forward to my mid season visit to Hadleigh High School, Suffolk, with this years car. It gives me a real buzz to promote Motorsport at a ‘grass roots’ level and at least try and answer all the questions the children ask me!

On top of that is my new website blog for Motors TV, this will be my first online blog so I’m aiming to make it as informative and interesting as possible. Its nice to think that I can give my readers an insight into what its like to be inside the cockpit with me and everything that a racer goes through.

Fingers crossed I will have some good news to write about throughout the season.

You can catch up with the blog at the official Motors TV website (www.motorstv.com) which will be kicking off just after the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain’s Championship launch on March 14th at Silverstone.

If you are anywhere near Silverstone on the 14th please do stop by and say hello.

David Confirmed as Accredited Silverstone Instructor

After an intensive assessment day at the Drive Silverstone centre last Thursday, 27th Jan, David is pleased to announce that he has made the grade to become a part of Silverstone's Instructors team.

David Comments:

‘After the first instructor training day I attended was cancelled last December it was great to be back at Drive Silverstone and get another shot at becoming part of the instructor team there.

The day was effectively split into two elements, on track and off track. For all my on track instructing and coaching I was fortunate enough to have GT Star Ben Clucas as my tutor for the day, while the rest of the day was handled by Silverstone’s top briefer, Steve Deeks.

The day was very much how I imagined Silverstone to run an instructors course, precise, focused and challenging!

Despite what could be called a steady start, with Bens help I was soon up to speed (as it turns out a little too up to speed on the Hot Lap section of the assessment!) and into a good coaching rhythm.

As you would always expect with a venue such as Silverstone their coaching technique is structured in a way to improve the drivers lap times safely, it reminded me a lot of the approach I take with person clients and the results are justification enough.

Overall the day was a great success and an enjoyable experience.’

2011 Formula Ford Race Dates Released

After a long winter wait the race dates for this years British Formula Ford Championship have been released, all be it in a provisional format.

The calendar should see David visiting the top UK circuits, along with the possibility of three top European tracks including Spa and Zandvoort.

The first three rounds of the championship are scheduled to kick off on April 9th/10th at the home of British Motorsport, Silverstone.

David Comments:

‘Looking at the dates and destinations we are scheduled to visit this year is very exciting, from a personal point of view it’s the best calendar British Formula Ford has produced for some years and I’m really looking forward to it.

I think to be starting this years campaign at Silverstone will be a great opener, especially as its on the National track configuration which always offers close racing.

At the moment I am still undecided about which chassis I will be driving, however I can say that there is the possibility of some very exciting news in the near future so watch this space…..’

2011 Looks like a good year...

‘Despite a low key year in 2010, 2011 is looking very promising for me as a driver already. This year has been a learning curve in so many ways for me, as a driver it was great to experience new machinery and racing in Europe within the British Formula Ford Championship, however it also struck me what a step up in terms of finances was needed to sustain a competitive championship attack.

The highlight of my year has to be the two fabulous races I had in Zandvoort with the Juno UK team that’s for sure.

2011 should be a very interesting year, not only will I be back in British Formula Ford but its highly likely I will be there in a privately owned chassis which will present me and the Ellesley Motorsport team with a great engineering challenge in itself.

Its nice to be able to sit here and think that I have some sort of sustainable plan for 2011, where almost 12 months ago a real plan was practically non existent!

Although its likely to be a long winter before we begin testing for the new season I am thoroughly looking forward the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.’
